(InfoWorld Electric)
G4 PowerBooks: InfoWorld Electric has a short article saying that Apples next PowerBooks will have a G4 processor running at 400 MHz and above. The 3.5 pounds portable also features a detachable LCD that can be replaced with goggles for so-called heads-up display (HUD). Apple declined to comment on not yet introduced hardware. (InfoWorld Electric)

C). (Micro Conversions Inc.)
VooDoo for iMac: Micro Conversions announced a 3Dfx VooDoo2 based graphics accelerator package for the iMac, shipping is planned to start in May. The iWizard has more to offer than just a graphics chip: an ADB port, the possibility to plug in a subwoofer and a CPU speed bump from 233 to 266 MHz (Rev. A & B iMacs) resp. from 266 to 300 MHz (Rev. C). The package has to be installed in the Mezzanine slot of the Columbus motherboard. This slot is existent in Rev. A & B, Rev. C only has the connection pins on the board, so Micro Conversions ships the connector on demand (has to be installed by your dealer, or you can do it yourself if you're a hardware dude). 22.04.1999: Erneute Serverprobleme: Aufgrund technischer, providerseitiger Probleme ist unser bisheriger Server leider nicht mehr erreichbar.
Server problems again: Due to technical problems at our providers side our (old) server is not reachable anymore. Macinfo will be available under http://216.121.37.3 for a few days, as soon as the domain name has been switched to the new server you can reach us under the old address http://www.macinfo.de. We're reconstructing the old site contents while updating the pages, some links may not work for a while. Note that we're unable to check our mails as long as the domain name has not been switched. We're very unhappy with these problems :-(
(www.irack.com)
G3 B&W "rack mounted": The former Mac cloner Marathon Computer builds 19" racks for Macs. Now they introduced the G-Rack, a 225 US$ solution to install a complete b&w G3 Mac in 19 inch wide racks. The only thing you have to do is remove the 4 handles of the Mac and replace them with G-Rack. Add 140 US$ and you'll get also telescoping sliding rails. Marathon has rack mounting options for many other Macs including the iMac. (www.irack.com)
(TechWeb)
Merced samples soon: According to TechWeb Intel is still on track with its IA-64 processor (Intel Architecture 64 bit, codenamed "Merced") and will have test samples within the next 3 or 4 months. They will start production by the middle of next year.
Intel also showed a prototype of their new "Geyserville" Pentium mobile technology where a laptop ran at 500 MHz when plugged into the wall and switched down to 400 MHz when running on battery power. By the end of this year the technology will be ready, allowing 600 MHz / 500 MHz battery powered. (TechWeb)
Kaleidoscope-Test
Kaleidoscope redraw speed: We've tested several Kaleidoscope schemes on their impact on window (re)drawing. Kaleidoscope allows you to modify the look of the MacOS using so called schemes.
We've taken Apples Platinum Appearance theme for reference (this is no scheme!) - it was the fastest in the test. The schemes ranged up to more than 800% the drawing time of the Platinum theme. The theme from DS Group crashed our machine, so there is no result. Kaleidoscope test
(MacUser)
G4 is coming: The english MacUser "previews" the features of the oncoming Motorola G4 chip (PowerPC 7400) and tries to answer the ever lasting question: Who will be faster, Intels or Motorolas processors (x86 vs. 680x0 and PowerPC)? If you're interested in some processor info take a look at their article. (MacUser)
(cnet)
More on Rambus RDRAM: Rambus develops memory chips which should close the gap between todays fast processors and the relatively slow memory. This can be done by accelerating the speed at which data is transferred. With 1.6 GB/sec throughput RDRAM is about twice as fast as todays SDRAM. All of the major memory manufacturers have licensed Rambus memory architecture and have announced that they will produce products, some of them have already started production. Since Intel delayed the release of its 820 chipset (codenamed "Camino"), which is Intels first chipset to support RDRAM, from June to around September, there will be no PCs with RDRAM until Q4 this year. The Pentium III processor does not reach 600 MHz at a bus speed of 100 MHz, thus there will be no 600 MHz fast PIII systems available until the 133 MHz chipset (820) is out (this leads to the assumption that the x86 core supports only up to multiplier 5.5 giving 550 MHz at 100 MHz bus speed - the PowerPC 750/G3 allows factor 8.0, that's 800 MHz CPU max at 100 MHz bus - a G3 version supporting 10.0 is projected to be released this summer). Until then Intel wants to combine the 100 MHz bus and RDRAM with faster processors using a MTH (Memory Translator Hub) - at the cost of performance. A cheaper way to get 600 MHz and more would be to boost SDRAM to 133 MHz, which is no problem according to some chip makers (we've running a G3/350 at 360 MHz and 120 MHz bus with no problems, its SDRAM was designed to run at 100 MHz).
Rambus had plans to release 800 MHz fast RDRAM chips this year ("Direct Rambus" with 1600 MB/sec and 16 or 18 bits data path), but there will be only 600 ("Base Rambus" with 600 MB/sec and 8 or 9 bits data path) and 700 MHz ("Concurrent Rambus" with 700 MB/sec and 8 or 9 bits data path). (cnet)
333 MHz iMac: Apple yesterday announced a gain of 135 Mio US$ and officially introduced the Rev. D iMac running at 333 MHz. The consumer machine will be available for 1199 US$ and in the 5 colors known from Rev. C (Blueberry, Grape, Strawberry, Tangerine and Lime). There are no modified specifications except for the CPU speed (32 MB RAM, 6 GB harddisk, 56k modem, 24X CD-ROM, ATI Rage Pro graphics chip with 6MB VRAM). We have no info on the existence of the undocumented Mezzanine slot (not supported by Apple, no official "feature") in Rev. D which was present in Rev. A & B iMacs and can be used to plug in third party SCSI adapters or VooDoo graphics accelerators etc. With Rev. C the Mezzanine slot has disappeared but its connectors on the board are still present (potential possibility to add the slot later).
(TechWeb)
700 MHz RAM: According to TechWeb some chip manufacturers have started production of 700 MHz fast RDRAM memory chips (Rambus Direct RAM). Hitachi Semiconductor (America) is said to have even 800 MHz fast 0.18 micron chips on their processing lines. 800 MHz fast RDRAM has a throughput of up to 1.6 GB/sec while 700 MHz achieves 1.4 GB/sec. TechWeb sais Rambus has added the 700 MHz version to the 600 and 800 MHz specifications on demand of Intel. Current MacOS and Windows machines are running up to 100 MHz fast memory (equals bus speed). (TechWeb)

07.04.1999: Yosemite Rev. (AppleInsider)
Yosemite Rev. B / 1.5: According to AppleInsider there will be some new blue&white G3 Macs available at the same time when the 333 MHz fast iMac (revision D) will start selling. The new G3's are said to have some boot ROM bugs fixed. The clock rate will be lifted 50 MHz for all models, this gives 350 MHz for the entry machine, 400 MHz will ship with CD-ROM or DVD-ROM, and a 450 MHz Mac will become the new flagship. There seems to be no news on other technical modifications; at least in the USA the prices for the new Macs will be identical to the currently shipping models (300-400 MHz). The new machines are expected to ship April 19th (some US dealers have confirmed they received the first new iMac machines). (AppleInsider)
Copper or Aluminium? Do you want to know whether your G3 CPU is based on Copper or Aluminium? Try the little utility written by Michiro Isobe, available at XLR8 your Mac. The program reads the value of the Processor Version Register (PVR), but note that it needs POST code (Power On Self Test) - machines with a L2 cache slot upgrade do not switch to the G3 module before the system extensions loading sequence.
(cnet)
333 MHz iMac: According to cnet there are faster iMacs on the way to be available in near future. Expected are models running at 333 or 300 MHz - being "virtually" identical to the current machines, available for the price of 1199 US$. There are no new color flavors expected. (cnet)
PII Celeron 433 MHz: A few days ago Intel introduced its 433 MHz fast low cost processor Celeron. The chip runs on 66 MHz bus speed an is supported by 128k 1:1 cache.
A look at the SPECmark95 scores makes it clear why Intel didn't publish these scores earlier: The first two Celerons (266 and 300 MHz) didn't have any cache at all and their performance was comparable to old processors - a 300 MHz Celeron without cache performs like a 200 MHz fast PowerPC604e or Pentium Pro while the Celeron 300A with 128k cache is comparable to a G3/250 or a PII/300. Note that the SPECmarks were compiled 1995 and are not a very good tool anymore to measure the performance of todays processors.
