| iPod shuffle wird bunt: Apples kleinster iPod, der shuffle, ist wie bisher in silber, neu aber auch in orange, blau, grün und pink zu haben. Gleich geblieben ist bei allen Modellen die Speicherkapazität von 1GB sowie der Preis (US$ 79, EUR 79).

| Intels Celeron D erreicht 3.6 GHz: Mit der Billigproduktelinie Celeron verdient Intel immer noch viel Geld, und das obwohl diese Prozessoren immer noch auf der alten "NetBurst" Architektur (Pentium 4) basieren, der Intel mit den neuen und effizienteren "Core" und "Core 2" Plattformen das Ende erklärt hat. Derzeit gibt es nämlich noch keinen Celeron auf Basis der neuen Architektur, und das dürfte wohl bis ins dritte Quartal dieses Jahres noch so bleiben. Der jetzt vorgestellte Celeron D 365 taktet mit 3.6 GHz, besitzt 512k onchip L2 Cache und unterstützt einen 533 MHz schnellen Front Side Bus (FSB, 133 MHz "quad-pumped") -- basierend auf der Grundtaktung des Busses, 133 MHz, ergibt sich mittlerweile ein ziemlich ineffizienter Multiplikator 27 (Taktrate CPU : Taktrate Bus = 27 : 1). Der zuvor letzte Celeron, der D 360 (3.46 GHz, ebenfalls mit 0.65µm "Cedar Mill" Kern), wurde im letzten September vorgestellt.
Noch steht die definitive Preisangabe aus, aber der neueste Celeron D 365 dürfte 69-79 US$ kosten; den derzeit billigsten Celeron D 326 (2.53 GHz) kann man bereits für 34 US$ bekommen. (Intel) |
| Intel Celeron D reaches 3.6 GHz: Intel is still making money with its low cost processor Celeron family, despite the fact that it's based on the old "NetBurst" architecture (Pentium 4) which is supposed to be replaced by the new and more efficient "Core" and "Core 2" platforms; a "Core"/"Core 2" based Celeron is not expected to appear before Q3/2007. Now Intel has introduced the new Celeron D 365, which is clocked at 3.6 GHz, sports 512k of onchip L2 cache and supports a 533 MHz Front Side Bus (FSB, 133 MHz "quad-pumped"). Based on the basic bus speed, 133 MHz, that results in an inefficiently high multiplier factor of 27 (clock speed CPU : clock speed Bus = 27 : 1). The latest previous Celeron D 360 (3.46 GHz, also based on the 0.65µm "Cedar Mill" core) was introduced last September.
Currently no official pricing is out for the new Celeron D 365, but it's expected to cost 69-79 US$; the cheapest Celeron D 326 (2.53 GHz) sells for 34 US$. (Intel) |

| Neues von der Macworld Expo in San Francisco: Mit dem Apple TV hat Steve Jobs die letzten September unter dem Codenamen "iTV" vorangekündigte Streaming Box jetzt offiziell vorgestellt. Das EUR/US$ 299 teure Gerät soll ab Februar erhältlich sein. Genau wie der iPod synchronisiert und spielt es den Medien-Inhalt eines Computers mittels iTunes (Mac oder PC), kann aber zusätzlich Musik, Filme und Bilder von bis zu fünf Computern per Ethernet oder WLAN (IEEE 802.11b/11g/11n) empfangen und an einen TV weitergeben (ohne diese Daten zu speichern). Die TV-Auflösungen 1080i (50/60Hz), 720p (50/60Hz), 576p (50Hz, PAL) und 480p (60Hz, NTSC) werden unterstützt (Update: native Unterstützung bietet Apple TV nur bis zu einer Datenauflösung von 720p (1280x720 progressive), das Format 1080i wird demnach skaliert dargestellt). Ein 48 Watt Netzteil ist im Gerät eingebaut.
Ausserdem hat Steve Jobs das von vielen bereits seit Jahren erwartete iPhone Handy vorgestellt. Smartphone, Internet-Kommunikator und Widescreen iPod in einem, 115 x 61 x 11.6 Millimeter gross und 135 Gramm schwer. Ausgestattet ist es mit 4GB oder 8GB Speicher, 2 MegaPixel Kamera, 3.5" Multitouch-Screen mit einer Auflösung von 320x480 Pixel und einer Dichte von 160 dpi (Punkte pro Zoll). Es verfügt über Gestik-Erkennung anstelle von Bedienknöpfen, merkt wie es in der Luft gedreht wird (Accelerometer, stellt Hoch- oder Querformat auf dem Display ein) und ob man es ans Ohr hält (Proximity/Nähe-Sensor, schaltet dann z.B. das Display ab) und erkennt wie hell oder dunkel die Umgebung ist (Ambient Light Sensor, reguliert Displayhelligkeit). Das Gerät unterstützt WLAN (IEEE 802.11b/11g), GSM (quad-band 850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz), Cingulars EDGE ("Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution", in den USA), Bluetooth 2.0+, und verfügt über einen iPod Dock Connector (zum Akku aufladen, zur Synchronisation, vermutlich auch geeignet um in den diversen Audiogeräten/Lautsprechern mit iPod-Anschluss zu funktionieren). Es synchronisiert Kontakte, Termine, Musik, Bilder, Videos, ... via iTunes mit dem Computer (Mac oder PC). Als Betriebssystem kommt Mac OS X (!) zum Einsatz, der Webbrowser Safari ist mit an Bord, ebenso ein dem Apple Mail gleichendes Emailprogramm, die von Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) bekannten Widgets, und und und ... die ganze Bedienung ist gespickt mit optischen Leckereien und Animationen. Die Batterie soll für fünf Stunden Telefonie oder 16 Stunden Musikgenuss reichen. Wer jetzt Appetit bekommen hat, sollte sich umgehend auf Apples Webseiten umschauen. Ab Juni soll das Gerät in den USA für US$ 499 (4GB) bzw. US$ 599 (8GB) erhältlich sein (jeweils inklusive Zweijahresvertrag mit Mobilfunkanbieter Cingular), in Europa wird es im letzten Jahresquartal kommen, in Asien erst 2008. Umbenennung: Nachdem Apple Computer, Inc. den Mac, den iPod und iPod Hi-Fi, Apple TV und jetzt auch das iPhone im Produkteportfolio hat, nennt sich die Firma neu nur noch Apple, Inc.

The device sells for US$/EUR 299 and will ship in February. Similar to the iPod it syncs and then plays the media contents of a computer using iTunes (Mac or PC), but it can also stream music, movies and pictures from up to five computers over ethernet or WLAN (IEEE 802.11b/11g/11n) to a connected TV (it's not saving these files on its harddisk). Supported TV resolutions are 1080i (50/60Hz), 720p (50/60Hz), 576p (50Hz, PAL) and 480p (60Hz, NTSC) (Update: apparently Apple TV only supports a native data resolution of up to 720p (1280x720 progressive), so the format 1080i will be scaled to display). The Apple TV features a built-in 48 Watt power supply.

| Core 2 Quad von Intel: Nachdem Intel mit dem Core 2 Extreme QX6700 und dem "Clovertown" Xeon 53xx letztes Jahr die ersten Vier-Kern-Prozessoren eingeführt hat (anfangs bzw. mitte November 2006), schiebt der Chipgigant nun einen QuadCore Desktop Prozessor nach: Der neue, 851 US$ teure "Core 2 Quad Q6600" beherbergt zwei DualCore Dies, taktet mit 2.4 GHz und verfügt über 2x 4MB onchip L2 Cache, das sich je zwei Kerne teilen ("shared"). Now they've added a desktop CPU to the QuadCore family: The new "Core 2 Quad Q6600" hosts two DualCore dies, is clocked at 2.4 GHz and features 2x 4MB of onchip L2 cache, which are each shared by two cores.
