(Apple)
MacBook Pro 17": This January Apple replaced the 15" PowerBook G4 with a Intel CoreDuo ("Yonah") based 15" MacBook Pro. Yesterday a 17" "Yonah" MacBook Pro has been added to Apples Intel based product line.
The 15" MacBook Pro had been introduced at clock speeds of 1.67 and 1.83 GHz, and then shipped at speeds of 1.83 and 2.0 GHz (the 2.0 GHz model with 2.16 GHz as built-to-order option); the new 17" machine will only get the fastest (2.16 GHz) CoreDuo processor available right now.
Compared to the 17" PowerBook G4 the high end MacBook Pro mainly gets the "usual" technological updates: Intel processor, 1.0 GB instead of 512MB memory (upgradeable up to max. 2.0 GB in PowerBook/MacBook Pro), three vs two USB 2.0 ports, the "MagSafe" power adapter, a built-in iSight camera and a brighter display (plus 36%, 300 cd/m2). Like the last revision of the PowerBook G4 the new 17" MacBook Pro is able to burn DoubleLayer media -- the 15" MacBook Pro is still not able to write DoubleLayer DVDs. From the PowerBook G4 family the 12" model is the last remaining member now. (Apple)

(Apple Boot Camp)
Windows XP on Intel Macs: Since Apple has shipped the first Intel based Macs, hackers have been working on the project how to install Windows XP on these machines. Among other problems they had to fight the point that Windows XP requires the old BIOS, whereas the Intel Macs are running on the modern EFI from Intel (Extensible Firmware Interface - PowerPC Macs use the OpenFirmware). A few weeks ago the project was finished successfully, and now Apple offers an official solution to install Windows XP on Intel Macs: Users can download and install the so called Boot Camp on their Intel Macs, for now available as Public Beta. The graphical assistant guides through all the required steps to install Windows: Create - or remove - a partition for the Windows operating system (minimum of 10GB free disk space required), burn a CD containing all the required drivers for the Mac, starting the Windows installation, and finally choosing what operating system to boot from -- this last step can always be repeated when holding down the Alt key while booting the Mac. The Public Beta requires MacOS X 10.4.6, the final release will be integrated in the next OSX 10.5 "Leopard". Still, Windows XP has to be bought separately.
Apple has no plans to sell - or support - Windows. However, with the move to officially support the Windows installation on Apple hardware more Macs will be sold in the future. Some of the new customers will maybe never use MacOS X and only use the nice hardware, some will convert to MacOS users over time, but all of them will get the chance to switch between the operating systems any time they want or need to. Anyhow, Apple is very likely to significantly increase its market share as a "PC" maker. (Apple Boot Camp)
