| Heimliches Mac mini Upgrade? Apple hat dem Mac mini offenbar ein heimliches Upgrade verpasst. Die neuerdings ausgelieferten Rechner sollen unterschiedlichsten Quellen zufolge mit 1.33 statt 1.25 bzw. 1.5 statt 1.42 GHz Taktrate laufen, der verbaute ATI Grafikprozessor Radeon 9200 soll jetzt über 64MB statt nur 32MB Videospeicher verfügen, das SuperDrive der teuersten Konfiguraton brennt jetzt auch DualLayer DVDs, und die 40 bzw. 80GB grossen Festplatten rotieren mit 5400 statt wie bisher mit 4200 Umdrehungen pro Minute. Am Preis hat Apple nichts geändert, ebenso wenig an der Produktbeschriftung auf der Box oder online im Apple Store.

| Secret Mac mini upgrades? It appears Apple has secretly upgraded its Mac mini family. According to many sources the latest shipped machines are running at 1.33 instead of 1.25 and 1.5 instead of 1.42 GHz, the ATI Radeon 9200 graphics processor is said to sport 64MB of video memory (previously 32MB), the SuperDrive of the most expensive model is now capable of burning DualLayer DVDs, and the 40 or 80GB harddisks now spin at 5400 instead of 4200rpm. Apple hasn't changed the pricing, and the shipped boxes still feature the old labels (1.25/1.42 GHz etc.); the Apple online store doesn't mention these technical upgrades either.

| Sun UltraSPARC IV+ ist da: Der Nachfolger des UltraSPARC IV Serverprozessors von Sun Microsystems ist jetzt erhätlich: Der neue IV+ verfügt wie sein Vorgänger über zwei Kerne (DualCore) und wird von Texas Instruments in einem 0.09µm Kupferprozess gefertigt (IV: 0.13µm). Seine Taktfrequenz beträgt 1.5 GHz (IV: 1.05 bis 1.35 GHz), als Zwischenspeicher stehen 2MB onchip L2 und 32MB off-chip L3 Cache zur Verfügung (IV: 16MB off-chip L2), die Anzahl der Transistoren auf dem Chip ist auf das 4.5-fache angestiegen (300 statt 66 Millionen), trotzdem soll der Neue mit etwas weniger Strom auskommen (ca. 90 vs 108 Watt).
Interessantes Detail für Kenner der Mac-Szene: Der UltraSPARC IV trägt den Codenamen "Jaguar", der neue IV+ heisst "Panther" -- sollte Sun dem gleichen Namensschema folgen wie Apple dies mit OS X tut, so müsste der nächste UltraSPARC Prozessor theoretisch "Tiger" heissen. (Sun Microsystems) |
| Sun UltraSPARC IV+ is here: The successor to the UltraSPARC IV server processor from Sun Microsystems is now available: The new IV+ sports two cores as does the IV (DualCore) and is made by Texas Instruments in a 0.09µm copper process (IV: 0.13µm). Its clock speed is 1.5 GHz (IV: 1.05 to 1.35 GHz), the cache system consists of 2MB onchip L2 and 32MB off-chip L3 (IV: 16MB off-chip L2), the number of transistors has been up'ed from 66 to 300 millions, nevertheless Sun says that power consumption has been reduced (ca. 90 vs 108 Watts).
Interesting detail for Mac users: The UltraSPARC IV has been codenamed "Jaguar", the new IV+ is called "Panther" -- now if Sun is following the same naming rules as Apple is using for OS X, then the next UltraSPARC processor will theoretically be called "Tiger". (Sun Microsystems) |

| Neuer iPod "nano": Apples neuestes Mitglied in der iPod Familie heisst nano, und das nicht ohne Grund: Der neue MP3 Player mit 2 oder 4GB Flash Speicher ist so dünn wie ein Bleistift (6.9mm), dass selbst ein iPod shuffle mit seinen 8.4mm dick wirkt. Die Frontfläche des Neuen misst 90 auf 40mm, das ist zwar mehr als beim shuffle (84x25mm), aber ein ganzes Stück weniger als beim normalen iPod (104x61mm). Auch bezüglich Gewicht steht der neue nano nicht schlecht da, trotz 1.5" Farbdisplay wiegt er nur 42 Gramm -- der display-lose shuffle, der ausserdem nur über einen Viertel der Speicherkapazität verfügt, wiegt 22g (iPod mit Festplatte: 167 bis 181g). Der nano kann wie alle aktuellen iPods mit Farbdisplay Fotos speichern und abspielen. Die Musikwiedergabe gibt Apple mit bis zu 14 Stunden an, bei Diashows (Fotos mit Musik) sollen es noch vier Stunden sein. Er kostet inklusive Ohrhörer, USB 2.0 Kabel und Dock Adapter 199 US$ / 199 EUR (2GB) bzw. 249 US$ / 249 EUR (4GB) und ist jeweils in weiss oder schwarz erhältlich. Am selben Media Event hat Apple ausserdem iTunes Version 5 für Mac OS X und Windows vorgestellt, für QuickTime ist ein Aktualisierer auf Version 7.02 verfügbar, und natürlich hat Steve Jobs das lange erwartete erste iTunes Handy gezeigt: Das rund 250 US$ teure Motorola ROKR (Preis mit Zweijahresvertrag bei Cingular Wireless in den USA) soll noch dieses Jahr erhältlich sein. | ||

| New iPod "nano": The newest member in Apples iPod family is called nano, and there's a good reason why: The new MP3 player sports 2 or 4GB of flash memory and is as thin as a pencil (0.27" / 6.9mm), even an iPod shuffle seems to be thick next to it (0.33" / 8.4mm). The front face measures 3.5x1.6" (90x40mm), that's more than the size of a shuffle (3.3x0.98" / 84x25mm), but smaller than a harddisk based iPod (4.1x2.4" / 104x61mm). Concerning weight the new nano is impressive: It contains a 1.5" color display and still only weighs 1.5 ounces (42g) -- the shuffle without display and having only a quarter of storage size weighs 0.78 ounces (22g) (the harddisk based iPods weigh 5.9 to 6.4 ounces / 167 to 181g). Just like the regular iPods with color display the new nano can store and show fotos and slideshows. Music playback can run for up to 14 hours, slideshows (fotos with music) play up to four hours. Including earphones, USB 2.0 cable and dock adapter it costs 199 US$ / 199 EUR (2GB) or 249 US$ / 249 EUR (4GB) and is available in both white or black color. The previous flash memory based iPod mini has been discontinued.

On the same media event Apple has introduced iTunes version 5 for Mac OS X and Windows, for QuickTime an update to version 7.02 is available, and of course Steve Jobs showcased the long awaited first iTunes Handy: The 250 US$ Motorola ROKR (price with 2year contract with Cingular Wireless in the USA) will be available later this year. |
