(PCI-Grafik). (XLR8)

Multiprocessing for beige G3 Macs: The US american hardware maker XLR8 now ships its MACh Velocity 66 G4 MPe upgrade for all beige G3 PowerMacs (66 MHz system bus). The accelerator allows you to install two CPUs that may even run at different clock speeds, meaning you can buy the upgrade with one CPU and add your old ZIF processor module to get a multiprocessing machine -- you can later replace the slower CPU with a faster one. The MACh Velocity 66 G4 MPe ships with one ("Solo") or two ("Duo") CPUs installed, running at 400, 450 or 500 MHz, each having 1MB of L2 backside cache running at half the processor speed (2:1). System requirements: MacOS 8.6 to 9.1, MacOS X is not mentioned on the website but is expected to be supported since the "Virtual Firmware" is stored in the non-volatile RAM on the motherboard and can therefore be easily updated. Btw: "MPe" stands for "Multi Processing enabled". A version for a 100 MHz system bus is also available, it can be installed in the b&w "Yosemite" G3 PowerMac and the G4 PowerMac "Yikes!" (PCI graphics). (XLR8)

(Intel)

Intels new Mobiles: The chip giant today introduced its 900 and 1000 MHz fast Pentium III Mobile processors, additionally the low end chip Celeron Mobile running at 750 MHz. The Pentium III Mobile/900 runs at 650 MHz in battery optimized mode (SpeedStep technology) while the 1.0 GHz chip then clocks down to 700 MHz -- the Celeron Mobile does not have this feature, but compared to the PIII Mobile it consumes less power anyway. The 1.0 GHz runner sells for 722 US$, the PIII Mobile/900 for 562 US$ and the Celeron Mobile/750 for 170 US$ (price in quantities of 1000 units). (Intel)

Where are the faster processors? Faster PowerPC processors don't appear on the market every month, especially Mac users know that. But what about x86 compatible chips? On March 6th 2000, that's more than a year ago, AMD introduced its K7/Athlon processor running at 1.0 GHz, that's the first commercially available CPU running at that speed. 3 days later Intel tried to follow its competitor with the Pentium III/1000 -- this chip was available in very limited quantities for a long time. In August 2000 Intel introduced the PIII/1133, but because of several glitches they took this chip from the market. So where stands the PC world 1 year after the introduction of the GigaHertz processors? AMD has introduced its K7 "New Athlon" (256k onchip L2 cache), which is today available at a speed of 1.2 GHz -- there has been a lot of speculation on the introduction date of their K7/1300, but it's a fact that AMD is not the one to do the next move since their processor is more powerful (in most tasks) than Intels PIII/1000 and the new Pentium 4 running at even 1.5 GHz.
In the segment of mobile processors there has been quite a bit of movement: Currently Intel offers its Pentium III Mobile with up to 850 MHz (900 and 1000 MHz are due today, Monday -- together with their Celeron Mobile 750). AMD is standing out in the rain, their Mobile Duron runs at up to 700 MHz only. Btw: This January Gericom introduced a mobile 1.0 GHz machine, it's based on the power hungry Pentium III for desktops.

(Xtrem)

XtremMac/1066: The official announcement of the 1066 MHz fast XtremMac has been delayed a bit. Now the tech specs have been made public, except for pricing and shipping date ("The XtremMac is under development."). The base is the current motherboard from Apples Power Macintosh G4 (133 MHz system bus, 4X AGP, 4 PCI slots). Originally they planned to cool down the RAM modules to get a bus speed of 150 MHz (from uncooled 100 MHz), but they decided to keep the design more compatible (simple) and more flexible, to allow the later upgrade of the machine. The case holds a maximum of 6x 3.5" half-height drives and sports a 320 MB/s SCSI RAID system with 15'000 rpm "Super Silent Drive" harddisks (160 MB/s per channel). Center piece of the XtremMac is an overclocked 1066 MHz PowerPC 7450 (G4+) from Motorola -- this is possible by using an Active Cooling System (ACS) which reduces the processor heat to a yet unpublished low temperature. Xtrem is currently experimenting with a dual processor setup. Because they use only original Apple parts (they buy a PowerMac and modify it, so guess the price of the machine) they say they have no problem in running MacOS 9 or X or any available Mac application. Xtrem hopes soon to integrate 8X AGP and 320 MB/s SCSI per channel. And we hope they will soon show a running prototype -- otherwise Motorola could be faster reaching 1 GHz. (Xtrem)
