MacOS X Beta auf welchen Rechnern? Offiziell kann MacOS X (Public Beta) auf allen Apple G3/G4 Rechnern installiert werden, also vom ersten, 233 MHz schnellen iMac bis hin zum G4 Cube, Mehrprozessor G4 Mac und den neuen iBooks -- einzige Ausnahme ist das allererste PowerBook G3. Inoffiziell funktioniert die Installation auch auf älteren Maschinen mit Prozessorupgrade. Accelerate Your Mac berichtet von einem funktionierenden PowerMac 8500 (original mit PowerPC 604/120) mit G3/466 Upgrade. Nicht geklappt haben soll die Installation auf einem blau-weissen G3 Mac mit installiertem G4 Upgrade -- ein Firmware Update seitens Apple hat in diesen Rechnern den Bootvorgang verhindert, wenn ein G4 Prozessor vorgefunden wird, die Upgradehersteller haben dieses Problem aber seit einiger Zeit umgehen können. Es scheint, dass mit dem neuen Betriebssystem einige für das klassische MacOS 8.x/9.x gelöste Probleme wieder auftreten, die Upgradehersteller werden sich aber mit Sicherheit darum bemühen, ihre Produkte auch MacOS X tauglich zu machen. An dieser Stelle soll noch erwähnt werden, dass Sonnet Technologies nun auch für die bisher im Regen stehen gelassenen PowerMacs 7200 und 8200 ein G3 Upgrade anbietet: Mit 400 MHz und 1MB Backside Cache (2:1, 200 MHz) geht nun auch auf diesen Maschinen die Post ab. MacOS X Beta on which machines? Officially MacOS X Public Beta can be installed on all Apple G3/G4 machines, from the first (233 MHz) iMac to the G4 Cube, G4 MP Macs and newest iBooks -- the only exception is the very first PowerBook G3. Inofficially the installation also works on older machines with processor upgrade. Accelerate Your Mac reports a successful installation on a PowerMac 8500 (originally with PowerPC 604/120) with G3/466 upgrade. Not successful was the installation on a b&w G3 Mac with G4 upgrade -- an Apple Firmware update for these machines prevented booting if a G4 CPU was detected, but the upgrade makers could solve this problem some time later. It seems they have to go through the same process they successfully completed for the classical MacOS 8.x/9.x, but you can be sure they will give their best to make their products MacOS X compatible. Important to mention here that Sonnet Technologies has introduced a G3 processor upgrade for the PowerMacs 7200 and 8200, the machines everybody said are not upgradeable: With 400 MHz and 1MB backside cache (2:1, 200 MHz) also these Macs rock again. Neue iBooks, ATI Radeon Grafikkarte und MacOS X Public Beta: An der Macworld Expo in Paris hat Apple neue iBooks vorgestellt: Deren G3 Prozessor läuft an einem 66 MHz Bus mit 366 oder 466 MHz (466: iBook Special Edition, "SE") und besitzt 256k onchip L2 Cache (1:1, IBM PowerPC 750CX), für die 2D und 3D Grafik ist ein ATI Rage Mobility mit 8MB Videospeicher zuständig (wie im PowerBook 2000), das Kompaktscheibenlaufwerk liest CD-ROMs bzw. DVDs (DVD: iBook SE) und zum USB Anschluss gesellt sich ein selbiger für FireWire. Abgesehen davon bleibt alles beim alten -- ausser der obligatorischen Farbänderung natürlich: Indigo (nur iBook), Key Lime (iBook, iBook SE) und Graphite (iBook SE) stehen neu im Programm. Das iBook kostet 1499 US$, das iBook SE 1799 US$.
Apple bietet für den PowerMac G4 optional (+99 US$) neuerdings eine ATI Rage 256 Radeon Grafikkarte mit eigenen 32MB SDRAM sowie DVI- und TV-Anschluss an. Radeon stellt maximal 1920x1440 Bildpunkte bei 75 Hz dar.
Von Apples nächstem Betriebssystem, MacOS X, ist ab sofort für jedermann eine Public Beta erhältlich. Die CD-ROM ist für 29.95 US$ über den Apple Store zu bestellen, und zwar in den Sprachen Englisch, Französisch und Deutsch. (Apple, MacOS X Beta)

AMD Duron mit 750 MHz: Drei Monate nach der Einführung des Duron Prozessors (600, 650, 700 MHz) stellt AMD nun eine 750 MHz schnelle Version vor. Ausser der höheren Taktrate hat sich nichts verändert, nach wie vor sind 128k L1 und 64k L2 Cache (sogenanntes "Victim Cache", das nur die Daten aufnimmt, die aus dem L1 herausfallen) im Chip integriert. Der neue Chip kostet 181 US$, den kleinsten Duron mit 600 MHz gibt es bereits ab 79 US$ zu kaufen. (AMD)

Überarbeiteter G4 Prozessor unterwegs: Einem Bericht des britischen Onlinemagazins MacUser zufolge will Motorola nächsten Monat am Microprocessor Forum im kalifornischen San Jose einen überarbeiteten G4 Prozessor (vermutlich den letztes Jahr angekündigten G4e) mit 1 GHz Taktfrequenz, Kupferverbindugen und SOI (Silicon On Insulator, entwickelt von IBM) vorstellen. Es handelt sich dabei um einen Prototypen, der die hohe Taktfrequenz nur dank geändertem Design erreichen soll -- das aktuelle Design bringt nur sehr wenige Chips hervor, die über 500 MHz stabil laufen, daher sind 0.5 GHz seit einem Jahr das schnellste, was Motorola Apple beim G4 Chip liefern kann. Leider dauert es üblicherweise mindestens ein Jahr, bis ein neuer Prozessor serienreif wird, MacUser geht daher davon aus, dass Macs nicht vor Mitte 2001 mit 1 GHz pro Prozessor erhältlich sein werden. Redesigned G4 processor on the way: According to the britisch MacUser magazine Motorola will show a 1 GHz fast G4 processor (using copper interconnectors and IBMs Silicon On Insulator) at next months Microprocessor Forum in San Jose. It will be a prototype of a new G4 family (probably the G4e announced a year ago). The chip design had to be changed in order to reach higher clock rates because the current G4 design results only in a few G4's running stable at above 500 MHz -- this is why 0.5 GHz is the fastest (G4) Motorola has to offer for a year now. Unfortunately normally it takes at least one year until a new chip is ready for mass production. MacUSer expects Macs running 1 GHz per CPU by mid 2001, the earliest. (MacUser)

PIII/1000 vs. G4/500 vs. G4/2x450: PhotoShop zählt zu den wenigen Applikationen, die sowohl die Velocity Engine im G4 Chip (AltiVec) wie auch den Mehrprozessorbetrieb unterstützen. Das Onlinemagazin Accelerate Your Mac hat seinen plattformübergreifenden Vergleich mit PS5bench aktualisiert: Ein 1.0 GHz schneller Pentium III (mit dem schnellen Rambus RDRAM) benötigt für die 21 Filteraufgaben insgesamt 85.8 Sekunden, ein halb so hoch getakteter G4/500 101.2 und eine Dualmaschine mit 2x G4/450 ganze 79.8 Sekunden. Anzumerken bleibt, dass z. Z. die meisten MacOS Anwendungen weder die Velocity Engine des PowerPC 7400/G4 noch mehr als einen Prozessor unterstützen. Letzteres wird mit MacOS X ändern, welches das Management mehrerer Prozessoren beherrscht (Multiprocessing); auch die Benutzeroberfläche Aqua von MacOS X soll massiv von der AltiVec Einheit im G4 Chip profitieren -- weitere Anpassungen müssen aber von den Entwicklern der jeweiligen Anwendungen selbst vorgenommen werden. PIII/1000 vs. G4/500 vs. G4/2x450: PhotoShop is one of the few applications to support both the G4's Velocity Engine (AltiVec) and multiprocessing. The online magazine Accelerate Your Mac has updated its cross-platform comparison using PS5bench: A 1.0 GHz fast Pentium III maschine finished the 21 filter tests in 85.8 seconds, a G4/500 (half the clock speed of the PIII) did it in 101.2 seconds and a dual Mac with 2x G4/450 finished in 79.8 seconds. Left to say that currently most MacOS applications are missing support for the G4's Velocity Engine as well as for multiprocessing. The latter will change with MacOS X which manages more than one CPU; also the MacOS X user interface (Aqua) will benefit a lot from the AltiVec unit built into the PowerPC 7400/G4 processor -- everything else is left to the developers of the applications.
