(AMD)

AMDs Duron reaches 1.8 GHz: AMD finally updated its low end processor Duron from 1.3 (in January 2002, 18 months ago) to 1.4 - 1.8 GHz. Its new "Applebred" core hosts 128k L1 and 64k L2 cache like its predecessor ("Morgan"); new is the interface to 266 MHz DDR-SDRAM, as well as the 0.13µm manufacturing process. The new Duron will be sold only in South America, Africa and East Europe. (AMD)

(Sun)

Gemini from Sun: For mid next year Sun has announced a new dual core processor, based on the meanwhile old technology of the UltraSPARC II. The new CPU named "Gemini" will be manufactured in a 0.13µm process, sport 512k onchip L2 cache on each core, and the clock speed will range from 900 to 1200 MHz. Power consuption is only 14 to 32 Watts, making the chip a good solution to power Suns Blade Servers (racks). In the long term up to 8 cores will be placed on one chip.
Suns current processor is the UltraSPARC III (1 core, up to 1.2 GHz). Its successor, the UltraSPARC IV (2 cores), was planned for 2002 but will not hit market before 2004. (Sun)

(Apple)

PowerMac G5 shipping: Apple is now shipping the PowerMac G5 worldwide -- first the single processor machines G5/1.6 and G5/1.8, while the dual G5/2.0x2 will follow by the end of this month. The rumored intermediate dual machine with 2x 1.8 GHz has so far not made official appearance. Since its introduction on June 23rd there have been more than 100'000 preorders for the PowerMac G5. (AMD)

AMD Opteron reaches 2.0 GHz: AMD has speed bumped its 64bit Opteron processor to 2.0 GHz (previously and still available: 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 GHz). First model to get this clock speed is the dual processor configuration (2xx series), the other chip models for single and 4/8way machines will follow later (1xx and 8xx series). The new 2.0 GHz Opteron 246 sells for 794 US$ (OEM pricing), the other Opterons have been reduced by up to 35% in price. (AMD)

PowerMac G5 Zwischenmodell?

Intermediate PowerMac G5? Due to the high number of preorders for the PowerMac G5 2.0 GHz Dual, Apple is likely to -- according to rumors -- soon introduce an intermediate model with two 1.8 GHz fast processors. The high demand for dual G5 machines cannot be fulfilled with the 2.0 GHz chip alone. According to MacBidouille the dual G5/1.8 will sell for 2549 US$, 150 US$ more than the G5/1.8 Single Processor (2399 US$). Customers who preordered a G5 will be contacted and asked whether they wish to change their order, according to MacBidouille. (MacBidouille (french))
