Happy New Year, dear reader! 2003 promises to become a very interesting year as far as new processors are concerned: Motorolas G4 with DDR-SDRAM interface, IBMs PowerPC 970, AMDs Athlon 64, Suns UltraSPARC IV, ... and also Apple will give us some new stuff (most part of it might be software, OSX 10.3, new & updated iApps).

(MacCityNet)

PowerBook G4 with built-in Bluetooth: Apple still doesn't ship any machine with built-in Bluetooth module and antenna. Matteo Festorazzi couldn't wait any longer and modified his PowerBook G4. All he needed was a USB Bluetooth adapter (from Mitsumi), a USB cable and some skills in dealing with wires and a soldering iron. The italian site MacCityNet has published his mod. The downside of this modification is that one of the USB ports will be permanently used for Bluetooth, you can't connect any other external devices to this port anymore. Another downside might be a reduced sending/receiving with the built-in AirPort wireless network, however time will tell how these systems interfere. (MacCityNet)

(Cube Zone)

G4 Cube upgrades to 2x 1.2 GHz? According to the online magazine Cube Zone the upgrade maker PowerLogix will ship new processor upgrades for the PowerMac G4 Cube by the end of January 2003. Today they have modules available at speeds of 800 and 1000MHz, early next year this is said to be topped by Dual modules sporting up to 2x 1.2 GHz. For the eleganten little Cube, which Apple shipped at a maximum clock speed of 500 MHz, this means a hell of a speed upgrade. Pricing is still subject to be announced (as are the dual upgrades). We're wondering how PowerLogix manages to make the heat of the two CPUs get out of this little Cube, without making it noisy as a hair blower. (Cube Zone)
