(Heise Newsticker)

Intel buys Alpha: Rumors were right, Intel bought the complete Alpha technology from Compaq, including engineers, software developers and infrastructure managers. In 2004 Compaq will start to use Intels IA-64 processors (Itanium and successors) instead of Alpha chips in their servers. It is planned to produce two faster versions of the current Alpha 21264 (EV6) and finish the development of the 21364 (EV7), but Intel and Compaq both didn't loose any word on the EV8 (21464) which is currently in design phase. It looks like the once fastest microprocessor will disappear very soon from this planet. (Heise Newsticker (german))

(Heise Newsticker)

210 GHz transistor from IBM: IBM people managed to create a transistor, based on their Silicon Germanium technology, running a transit clock speed of 210 GHz (210'000 MHz) - IBM plans to break the 300 GHz barrier with Silicon Germanium chips. The current Silicon based technology will reach its physical barriers in a few years (at a few GHz). (Heise Newsticker (german))

(Heise Newsticker)

New owner (once again) for the Alpha processor? A few years ago the DEC Alpha chip was leading the market of microprocessors. 500 MHz were a reality in 1996, by that time Intel and IBM/Motorola were clocking their fastest chips at 200 or 240 MHz (Pentium Pro and PowerPC 603ev). Financial troubles at DEC slowed down further development, finally DEC was bought by Compaq. Since then Alpha has lost market share and a lot of performance advantage, today 833 MHz is the fastest it can run, thats a plus of 67% in almost 5 years (not speaking about the powerful architecture improvements, called "Evolution Steps"). Intel by comparison added +750% clock speed (Pentium 4) and Motorola could improve to 305% (+205%, PowerPC 7450).
Now there're rumors stating Compaq plans to sell some of its hardware business to focus more on service and software (restructuring), thus the Alpha design, including development team, will be sold. Potential buyer number one is Intel. According to a Federal Trade Commission (FTC) decision Intel has to manufacture Alpha processors in the DEC fabs they bought four years ago. Some of the Alpha architecture features, especially the Simultaneous Multithreading Technology (SMT) implemented in the EV8 Alpha (still under development) promise a lot more performance than what Intels IA-64 (Itanium) has to offer. If Intel is really to buy the Alpha it may happen that this chip will soon disappear from the market, and Intel will once again assimilate the good stuff somebody else worked out. (Heise Newsticker)

Intel Pentium III at 1.13 GHz and 0.13 micron: Intel has introduced the latest Pentium III processor: The 1.133 GHz fast "Tualatin" is the first processor manufactured in a 0.13 micron process (typical these days is 0.18, 0.22 and 0.25 micron). Compared to the old PIII ("Coppermine") the size of the onchip L2 cache has been doubled (server processor): Instead of 256k there are now 512k - according to first benchmarks the performance gain seems to be minimal. A desktop version should follow soon, a Mobile is due later. A PIII running at 1.266 GHz is planned. (Heise Newsticker (german))

(PowerMacincube Teil 1, 2, 3a, 3b, 4, 5)

Project "PowerMacincube" completed: As our friends of MacGuardians have informed us, their "PowerMacincube" project is finished now. Their goal was to move a Gossamer motherboard (beige PowerMac G3) into a black NeXT cube, including an overclocked G3 upgrade, a slot-loading DVD drive and some more extras. The illustrated report consists of 5 parts (german only). If you'd like to do the same: You need some technical skills, a lot of patience and money, and of course one of those rare NeXT cubes. (PowerMacincube Part 1, 2, 3a, 3b, 4, 5 -- all german)

AMD Athlon 1.4 GHz and Duron 950 MHz: One day after the introduction of the Athlon MP processor, which targets the market of workstations and smaller servers, AMD introduces two new versions of their existing CPU lines: The 1.4 GHz K7/Athlon for desktop machines (sporting the old "Thunderbird" core) and the 950 MHz low end chip Duron ("Spitfire" core, identical to Thunderbird except for the size of the onchip L2 cache) -- priced at 253 and 122 US$. Except for the clock speed there're no changes compared to their respective predecessors. (AMD)
Now don't we all wish IBM and Motorola would increase the frequency of introducing newer and/or faster PowerPC processors...

(Heise Newsticker)

AMD K7/Athlon MP: AMD has released its first K7 processor for dual machines: The Athlon MP targets workstations and smaller servers, which have been using Intels Pentium Xeon chips so far. Only 3 weeks ago AMD introduced its Mobile Athlon 4 processor featuring the new "Palomino" core -- the Athlon MP is based on the same new core. The new motherboard (sporting the new AMD-760MP chipset) requires special components like registered DIMMs (DDR SDRAM with address buffer chips) and a power supply with exotic plugs (which will be shipped to big customers only), therefore the price is not attractive and home users won't jump on the MP train by now. AMD officially only supports the Athlon MP, available at a maximum speed of 1.2 GHz, running on the new chipset -- the german Heise Newsticker notes they also made two 1.333 GHz Athlons (old "Thunderbird" core) and even two Duron 900 MHz run on the 760MP chipset.
Official information states that Palomino based Athlons for desktop computers are due only in the next half year. (Heise Newsticker (german))
