(MacUser)

Next PowerPC 74x0 processors: According to an article of the british online magazine MacUser Motorola will be able to ship the next G4 revision (codenamed "V'Ger") in Q1/2001. V'Ger will most probably be called PowerPC 7420 or 7430. It comes at speeds of 600-800 MHz and features copper interconnects and a second AltiVec unit. In summer 2001 the next G4 revision ("G4e" or "Apollo", most probably called PowerPC 7450) is due. It's said to run at 800-1000 MHz, it has a deeper pipeline and an expansion of the AltiVec technology. Whether or not Motorola will be on track with this inofficial roadmap, Apple still has to put more than one processor into Macs to compete with the high clockrates in the x86 world (Intel, AMD). Some rumors say there are G4 Macs running in Apples labs to host up to 8 PowerPC 7410 CPUs. This suggests that 4-way Macs are in a not so distant future, maybe we'll see a Power Macintosh QP (Quad Processor) at Macworld Expo in January. (MacUser)

"I Have A Dream" Update: "I Have A Dream" was initiated by Betram Haller, main goal is to support selling Macs in big german and austrian shopping malls like Karstadt or MediaMarkt. 200 people in Germany and 7 in Austria are working for Apple in the so called "iTeam", but this is not enough. Now Apple Germany showed interest in growing the german iTeam, they are looking for people in the area of Hamburg. If you're interested please contact Bertram. For further coordination of all volunteers there has been created a mailing list; you can find more information on the project homepage (german).

(ZDnet)

First Itanium Server Prototypes: According to a ZDnet article Intels first 64bit processor Itanium (codenamed Merced) has made it -- after a series of endless delays -- into some experimental systems which are being shipped to a few customers for evaluation. In the first quarter 2001 hundreds of pilot machines will be shipped, full production should be ramped up by the middle of next year. Itanium, capable of running in single and dual CPU systems, will be initially running at 733 and 800 MHz, each with 2 or 4MB of onchip cache (1:1). The chip price is said to be comparable to the current large cache Pentium III Xeon, which cost between about 1700 to 3500 US$. (ZDnet)

(Toms Hardware, PC World)

Some Pentium 4 benchmarks: Intels new Pentium 4 processor (codenamed Willamette) features an "extended MMX extension" (MMX became SSE in the PIII and now SSE2 in the P4) and a lot of other marketing efficient new features, even so most of the published benchmarks show a rather disappointing picture. Some PC magazines have tested the new P4 against AMDs strongest K7/Athlon (1.2 GHz, 133 MHz bus with DDR SDRAM) and the P4 predecessor PIII running at 1.0 GHz. In some tests even the PIII/1000 is faster than the P4/1500 (which is clocked 50% faster, by the way). AMDs flagship leaves the P4 in the dust when it comes to FPU tasks like rendering: The K7 finishes 150 pictures per hour in 3D Studio Max2 rendering while an overclocked 1.73 GHz Willamette gets only 90 pictures done in the same time -- the PIII/1000 renders 86 pics. Two benchmark exceptions: In MPEG4 video encoding and the 3D shooter Quake III the 1.5 GHz P4 shows an approximate 10-15% performance advantage over the K7. Example against Quake III: The K7 gets higher frame rates in Unreal Tournament, another 3D game.
The P4 is clearly missing optimized software. No compiler supports the new architecture, no application uses the new SSE2 instructions yet. This will be a matter of time, Intel said that they will sell more Pentium III processors than P4s next year. But Intel impressively demonstrated that it can offer high clock rates with not much of a problem (Toms Hardware was able to overclock a P4/1500 to 1.73 GHz without any problems). (Intel)

Intel Pentium 4: Intel today officiallly introduced its Pentium 4. The new processor is available at speeds of 1.4 and 1.5 GHz. It features 256k 1:1 L2 cache (same as Pentium III Coppermine), 42 million transistors, a (compared to the PIII) longer/deeper "Hyper Pipeline" that enables faster clock speeds, 2 GHz should be available somewhen next year. The new chip core adds 144 new instructions (additional to the PIII instruction set) and a thing called "Rapid Execution Engine" which executes some mathematical instructions like addition and subtraction at twice the processors speed, this means internal 2.8 or 3.0 GHz. Other Intel highlights are the "Execution Trace Cache" and the "Advanced Dynamic Execution". The clock speed of the system bus is now three times as fast as on the latest Pentium III chips: 400 instead of 133 MHz. Responsible for this fast bus is the Intel 850 chipset which only communicates with Rambus RDRAM -- many PC makers don't want to switch to this memory type because, compared to the current DDR SDRAM, it's still very expensive while offering only a marginal performance gain. Intel has already announced a Double Data Rate SDRAM chipset ("Brookdale") due in the 2nd half of next year -- chipset maker Via Technologies Inc. will most probably have an own solution ready sooner. In using DDR SDRAM the system bus speed will drop down to the current 133 MHz (maybe some MHz faster), but analysts do not expect serious performance drops when switching back to (DDR) SDRAM. (Intel)

16.11.2000:

500 MHz). Hallo Motorola, IBM, Apple? Zeit endlich aufzuwachen! Die "Performace Optimization With Enhanced RISC Performance Chip" Architektur wird langsam aber sicher zu einer Lachnummer.

1.5 GHz next Monday: Intel will officially introduce its Pentium 4 processor next monday, November 20th. The chip with new core (P7, featuring 42 million transistors) will start at 1.4 and 1.5 GHz, that's 25% faster (clocked) than AMDs K7/Athlon (max. 1.2 GHz) and three times as fast (clocked) as current PowerPC G3 and G4 processors. Hello Motorola, IBM, Apple? Time to wake up! The "Performace Optimization With Enhanced RISC Performance Chip" is becoming a really bad joke.

(Intel)

Intel Celeron 733/766: The Intel low cost chip Celeron is now available at speeds of up to 733 and 766 MHz, at the beginning of this year its maximum speed was 500 MHz. It still runs on a 66 MHz front side bus (FSB), this results in a multiplier (CPU : bus ratio) of X11.5 on the Celeron/766. The higher this number, the less additional performance you get per additional MHz, because the processor has to wait more and more time to get information from the slower parts in the system (like the memory). There's one question: How long does Intel intent to further develop this cheap microchip for a bus speed that has been in use for more than 7 years now? The fastest x86 processors from AMD (1.2 GHz K7/Athlon) and Intel (1.0 GHz Pentium III) run on a 133 MHz system bus, meaning they have multipliers of X9.0 and X7.5. The Macs currently offer a maximum CPU : bus ratio of X5.0 (max. 500 MHz in PowerMac G4, PowerBook G3 and iMac, each on a 100 MHz bus), the fastest iBook has X7.0 (466 : 66). Older Macs can be upgraded to a maximum of X10.0 (like 500 MHz on 50 MHz bus) because the PowerPC 750/G3 doesn't offer higher multipliers -- on the PowerPC 7400/G4 the limit is currently at X9.0. However, the G3 processor is stuck at 500 MHz since September 1999 (yes, that's 14 months), while the fastest G4 was introduced last February, a 3/4 year ago. (Intel)

(The Register)

Intel at 0.13 mikron with copper interconnects: According to the british online magazine The Register Intel is successful in moving to a 0.13 micron process -- finally they're also moving to copper interconnects like IBM and Motorola have done a while ago (previously Aluminium was used). Starting somewhen next year the Pentium III and 4 will be produced at 0.13 micron, with the low cost chip Celeron Mobile following later. Intel said they have manufactured 0.13 micron Static RAM (SRAM, memory on the chip die) successfully running at 1.6 GHz. Current microprocessors from IBM, Motorola, Intel and AMD are manufactured using a 0.18 micron process -- an exception is the Alpha processor, it's 0.25 micron are comparable to IBMs PowerPC 604r (250 to 350 MHz, 1997), AMDs K6 (2. revision, 1998) or Intels Pentium II (2. and 3. revision, 1998) and the 1. generation Pentium III (without onchip cache, 1999). (Sonnet Technologies)

G4 upgrade for PowerMac 72/8200: In September Sonnet Technologies announced a G3/400 upgrade with 1MB of backside cache (499.95 US$) for the Power Macintosh 7200, now they added a G3/400 with 512k cache (running at 3:1 ratio, 133 MHz -- 399.95 US$) and a G4/400 with 1MB 2:1 cache (599.95 US$). This way the old (introduced in August 1995) machine can almost keep up with todays Macs (consider adding a faster graphics card and harddisk). The PM 7200 was said to be non-upgradeable since its CPU is soldered on the motherboard and its Catalyst board doesn't have a L2 cache slot that carries the required signals to run a CPU (there are upgrades for other machines which can be put in the L2 cache slot). Sonnet chose a PCI based solution: The processor sits on a PCI board which also features 3 RAM slots; to the RAM on the board there's a 66 MHz bus, to rest of the computer the regular 33 MHz PCI bus is used. There must be at least one RAM module installed on the motherboard to allow booting, but at least half of the installed memory must be on the upgrade board. Of course the Crescendo 7200 upgrade runs also in the PowerMac 8200. (Sonnet Technologies)
