PIII Coppermine geht weiter: Laut TechWeb will Intel am 31. (TechWeb)

PIII Coppermine continued: On 31st of July Intel will introduce a 1.13 GHz fast Pentium III "Coppermine" processor, according to TechWeb. Like for the 1 GHz PIII, which Intel released much too early (March 8) and only because AMD introduced a 1 GHz K7/Athlon two days before, the PIII/1133 will be released in "limited volume production" only. (cNet, Intel)

Intel Willamette = Pentium 4: Intel announced that the successor to the Pentium III, currently codenamed "Willamette", will be named Pentium 4 (switching from roman to arabic numering scheme). Pentium 4 is scheduled for late Q3 or early Q4 this year. It will debut at 1.4 GHz, run on a 400 MHz system bus (800 MHz Rambus RDRAM) and have a new core. Since the Pentium Pro (introduced in October 1995) every Pentium processor was based on the same "P6" core (Pentium II, Pentium III, Celeron as well as PII/Xeon and PIII/Xeon). Analysts expect that the Pentium 4 will be split in sub families too (desktop, server, mobile, low-end). Willamette will be speed bumped in steps of 100 MHz. (cNet, Intel)

Intel Celeron reaches 700 MHz: As an answer to AMDs new and not expensive Duron processor Intel now ships the Celeron chip at 633, 667 and 700 MHz. Concerning the price the Celeron shows bigger numbers (138, 170 or 192 US$ -- up to 23% more cost at comparable speeds), concerning technical features (66 MHz vs. 200 MHz system bus, 32k + 128k vs. 128k + 64k onchip cache) and performance (see news from June 21st) the Celeron is the minor product. (Intel)
Looking at the 700 MHz AMD and Intel offer now in their low end products Apples 366 MHz iBook and the 350 or 400 MHz iMac don't seem to be competitive anymore -- not comparing the 500 MHz in the professional product line, where AMD and Intel offer up to 1 GHz. Clock speed is not all that counts, but hey, we're talking about half the MHz of Windows machines now.

(Sonnet Technologies)

Processor upgrades with MacOS X support: The hardware maker Sonnet Technologies Inc. has announced new drivers for this summer to make the processor upgrade lines Crescendo PCI and Encore ZIF run under MacOS X (it is yet unclear whether upgraded NuBus Macs, PowerBooks and machines with upgraded processor card in the L2 slot will be supported too). The Crescendo PCI supports PowerMacs of the 2nd generation having a processor daughtercard (Motherboards Tsunami, Nitro and TNT) and hosts G3 and G4 chips at speeds of up to 500 MHz, while the Encore ZIF brings these processors to the beige (Gossamer) and b&w (Yosemite) G3 Macs and the first G4 machine (Yikes). MacOS X officially only supports G3 and G4 machines from Apple (beige and newer PowerMac G3, PowerMac G4, PowerBook G3, iMac, iBook). If you have an older machine running a processor upgrade you need drivers to get support under MacOS X, otherwise you'll have to stick with the classic MacOS. (Sonnet Technologies)

(XLR8yourMac)

PhotoShop comparison G4/500 vs. PIII/1000: The online magazine Accelerate Your Mac! has run a PhotoShop 5.5 comparison between a Power Macintosh G4/500 and a 1 GHz Pentium III box. The G4 finished the 21 filters in 101.2 seconds, while the PIII did it in 85.8 seconds, 15.2% faster. The Intel machine was based on the high bandwidth Rambus RDRAM (133 MHz system bus). Concerning the price both machines are about equal. (XLR8yourMac)

192 US$ bei 600, 650 bzw.

Details on AMDs Duron processor: There was a lot of speculation on the size of the onchip L2 cache of the new AMD Duron processor. The rule sais that each cache level should be at least twice the size of prior level, in the case of Duron, which has 128k L1, 256k L2 would be expected, but this would have made it equal to the New Athlon processor. Surprisingly Duron features only 64k L2, but it's "Exclusive cache", this means the content of the L1 will not be mirrored in the L2 -- Duron competitor Intel Celeron does the mirroring (32k L1, 128k L2 onchip). Even with a that small cache the cheap AMD chip (better say affordable, it's 112, 154 or 192 US$ at speeds of 600, 650 aot 700 MHz) beats the crap out of it's direct competitor Celeron from Intel, and it's on par with the Pentium III (at the same clock speed) in some benchmarks.

(Intel)

New Mobile processors from Intel: The worlds largest chip maker yesterday introduced 5 new Mobile processors: 2 new Celeron Mobile (600 and 650 MHz and an optimized 500 MHz) and 2 Pentium III Mobile with SpeedStep Technologie (switches down the clock speed if the laptop is running on battery power). If you unplug such a notebook from the wall the newest SpeedStep chip reduces its clock speed from 750 to 600 MHz (former chips reduced to 500 MHz, the PIII Mobile 700 to 550 MHz). The redesigned PIII Mobile 600 switches down to 500 MHz, but then it consumes only 1 Watt power on average. Even the 750 MHz chip consumes only 2 Watts when running in battery optimized mode (probably at the mentioned 600 MHz). Compare this to the power saving PowerPC 750/G3 from IBM: at 500 MHz it eats 6 Watts... The PowerPC family is not split in two versions for server/desktop and mobile machines (like Intel is doing) -- but you have to separate the chips from Motorola and IBM, the latter are manufactured in a more advanced process and consume less power. (AppleInsider)

New iMacs in July? Macworld Expo July is approaching, and once more there are surfacing rumors on a new iMac with built-in 17 inch display (codenamed "P7A"). According to AppleInsider the production of the current iMac line will be stopped soon, and Apple will start manufacturing a new iMac series early in July. The strongest new iMac (DV Special Edition) will have a 450 MHz fast G4 processor and a 17 inch display built-in, while the other machines will come with fast G3 chips (said to be new PowerPC 750CX from IBM) and 15 inch displays. All new iMacs will have a redesigned keyboard and a new mouse. AppleInsider is also reporting on a new iMac industrial design, codenamed "iBox". It will consist of "no more than the base of an iMac computer, allowing users to select their choice of 'slide-on,' attachable, candy colored displays, which are said to include two 15 inch displays: one CRT and one LCD, and a large screen 17 inch CRT short-neck display". While the introduction of a new iMac line seems probable the iBox may not make its way to the surface until Macworld Expo in July. (AppleInsider)

14.06.2000:

(IBM PowerPC, XLR8yourmac)

Official specifications on IBMs next G3 processors: Contrary to some rumors (see yesterdays news on an AppleInsider article) the successor to the next G3 processor, the PowerPC 750CXe (available 2001), will not have 512k of onchip L2 cache (1:1), but only 256k. IBM did not choose the 512k size because this would increase the Die size by 33% and raise production cost by 40% (compared to the 256k setup). Bigger Dies allow less chips per Wafer and result in less defect free Dies. Some optimistic rumors said the CXe will support external L3 cache, this will not be the case.
Sample units of the next G3 processor (PowerPC 750CX) are being shipped to developers now, samples of the CXe will follow in Q4/2000. The CX will reach speeds from 350-550 MHz, the CXe 500-700 MHz. At 400 MHz there's a typical power consumption of 4 Watts (for the CX ?). The Die which is manufactured in a 0.18 micron process is 42 square millimeters in size and hosts 21.5 million transistors -- for comparison the PowerPC 750 without any onchip cache (0.22 micron): 40 square millimeters, 6.35 million transistors.
In SPECint95 the 750CX, running at 450 MHz, reaches the same score as a PowerPC 750 running at 400 MHz having 1MB of external L2 cache (12.5% higher clock speed (112.5%), but only 25% in L2 cache size) -- this is not a really stunning result, but your mileage will vary depending on the kind of application you're running. (IBM PowerPC, XLR8yourmac)

13.06.2000:

(AppleInsider)

More on IBMs oncoming G3 processors: The online magazine AppleInsider claims to have additional info on IBMs oncoming G3 processors: The PowerPC 750CX (codenamed "SideWinder") will reach 600 MHz and more and feature 256k onchip (1:1) full processor speed L2 cache (just like Intels Pentium III "Coppermine" and AMDs K7 New Athlon processor). SideWinder will be manufactured in a 0.18 micron process and have copper interconnectors and SOI (Silicon On Insulator). Its said to have a very low power consumption. Even more exciting is the PowerPC 750CXe (codenamed "Anaconda") -- according to AppleInsider IBM people are speaking of it as the "Max killer" ("Max" is Motorolas G4 processor). Anaconda will feature 512k of 1:1 onchip L2 cache, support external L3 cache and reach 1 GHz next year.
As good as this sounds, there's bad news too. Apple is currently moving all its computers to the G4 processor and will most probably not use IBMs oncoming G3 chips (they are due late this summer). There may be a temporary exception for the mobile machines PowerBook and iBook, they could need a faster power saving chip like the SideWinder until they are moved to the G4+. But for 3rd party processor upgrade developers especially the Anaconda G3 may be of interest: As long as there are only a few applications taking advantage of the AltiVec unit in the G4 processor a G3 chip running at high clock rates, having more onchip L2 cache (512k is twice the amount of what the G4 successor G4+ will have) and supporting external L3 cache (like the G4+) will be a quite good performer, and it will cost less than the G4(+). (AppleInsider)

5:2 getaktet -- 299 bzw. 499 US$, Auslieferung Ende Juni). (AppleInsider, PowerLogix)

More G3 upgrades for iMac and PowerBook? According to AppleInsider there may be soon some G3 upgrades for the iMac and PowerBook from PowerLogix (currently Newer Technology is shipping such products). Already announced is the iForce for the iMac: one running at 400 MHz, featuring 512k of backside cache (200 MHz 2:1), the other clocked at 500 MHz having 1MB of 200 MHz fast cache (5:2). AppleInsider is speculating on two PowerBook versions running at 500 MHz, having 512k or 1MB of backside cache (probably clocked at 200 MHz 5:2). However there is no official press release for the PowerBook upgrades yet. (AppleInsider, PowerLogix)

192 US$. (AMD)

New processors from AMD: Advanced Micro Devices today introduced its revamped K7/Athlon processor, they just call it the "New AMD Athlon". It features 256k onchip L2 cache (clocked 1:1) and is running at 750 to 1000 MHz (in 50 MHz steps available). AMD published some Windows based benchmark results and the runtimes of some typical applications like PhotoShop and 3D Studio Max -- the New Athlon clearly beats Intels Pentium III in these tests. No results of plattform independent tests like the SPECmark2000 have been published yet. Some insider expected the New Athlon to be clocked higher than the old K7 processor, this is not yet the case.
Additionally AMD introduced its new processor line called Duron. It features onchip L2 cache (1:1) and runs on a 200 MHz fast system bus (like the Athlon processor). Duron, which is targeted at the value desktop market, comes at speeds of 600, 650 and 700 MHz; it cost 112, 154 or 192 US$ (quantities of 1000 units). AMD still doesn't publish the size of the L2 cache. Since the L1 cache is already 128k one would expect 256k of L2, but then there wouldn't be any difference to the New Athlon anymore -- the question is if a L2 sized equally to the L1 (128k in this case) will really boost performance (rule: each cache level should be at least twice the size of the prior level). (AMD)

Processors to come out in 2000: We informed about the maximum clock speed of current processor families a few days ago (see news for May 10). Now we collected information on the planned CPUs that are due this year. The following table contains both officially announced dates/features and insider expectations on these processors.
Note that some of this information is not realistic. E.g. the UltraSPARC III from Sun Microsystems was announced in 1998 and is still not shipping -- its successor, the UltraSPARC IV, is due this year; the Alpha 21264A currently runs at up to 750 MHz -- until the end of this year they want to make it run at twice this speed, for that they have only 7 months time left.
