30.01.1999: Hintergrund-Info: G3 & Bus-Speed.
Background info: G3 & bus speed. Intel announced that the bus speed of its systems will be lifted from 100 to 133 MHz. This raises the question about Apples new Macs running at a new bus speed of 100 MHz. In systems with L2 cache onboard the cache runs at the same speed as the system bus does, so the bus speed really influences overall performance. In systems featuring backside cache (PowerPC 750/G3, Pentium II) the cache speed is related to the processor speed, not to the system bus. So the influence of the bus speed to overall performance is only marginal. We have run some real world tests and put the results on our system bus page (fact number 2b). This also shows that old Macs equipped with a G3 upgrade are not left behind the current powerhorses (assuming you put in a faster graphics accelerator and harddisk).
Power consumption: We updated our chart on power consumption of various processors and included the new Pentium II Mobile.
600 MHz: Next month (February 15th) at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) in San Francisco and San Jose we'll see some interesting processors. Intel will show a 600 MHz prototype of its Pentium III (codenamed Katmai) which features the extended multimedia instruction set MMX2 ("KNI" Katmai New Instruction). IBM showed a 1.1 GHz (1100 MHz) fast PowerPC prototype (64 bit) last year and will present a 580 MHz processor built at the Silicon On Insulator technology (SOI) next month. Motorola will show a 450 MHz PowerPC featuring the 128 Bit vector unit AltiVec (besides the 32 bit integer unit and the 64 bit FPU). Also there will be AMDs K7 and a 500 MHz fast PA-RISC processor from HP and last but not least a gigabit SDRAM memory chip from Samsung (0.14 micron), having 15 times the capacity of todays memory chips.
SCSI Booting in the new PowerMac G3: Initio has announced the "Miles Bluenote", a PCI SCSI card which allowes booting from connected SCSI devices in the new G3 Macs "Blue & White". Current almost all SCSI cards with booting capability do not work in the new machines because of the changed ROMs: instead of 4MB there are only 512k OpenFirmware ROM installed ("New World" Revision 2). The Miles Bluenote will be available in February, no pricing is available yet.
All Miles U2W cards (INI-A100U2W-MAC) can be upgraded with new firmware (SIM) to enable booting, the same holds for all Miles UW (INI-9100UW-MAC) that shipped after January 15th 1999. Miles UW cards that shipped before January 15th can be upgraded/exchanged for 50 US$ to new cards with the new firmware. The new SIM will be available in February as a beta release and in March as final product.
New web browser for MacOS: Purple Shark Software has announced a new Mac web browser for 39 US$ (Shareware) which supports fast and stable browsing while supporting 90% of the features used in daily surfing (HTTP, FTP, Usenet, Email). "WebThing" is devloped in spare time and is not to be understood as a direct competitor to Netscape or Microsoft. Currently there is no version available for download.
New mobile Pentium II processors: Intel has released four new Pentium II Mobile processors (0.25 micron process): 366, 333, 300PE and 266PE. These chips now feature 256k backside cache integrated in the CPU (hence the "PE" in the name - mobile chips running at 266 and 300 MHz are already available). With the exception of the Pentium II Xeon all PII have had 512k backside cache placed on a separate module and running at half the processor speed (2:1) (Xeon: 512k, 1MB or 2MB 1:1 cache).
With a typical power consumption of 9.5W the 366 MHz mobile chip consumes nearly 2.5x as much as a G3 processor running at 400 MHz (G3/400: 4.1W - 333: 8.6W, 300PE: 7.7W, 266PE: 7.0W), the G3 isn't even specially designed for mobile computers.
Also new is the Pentium II Celeron Mobile; running at speeds of 266 and 300 MHz it features 128k onchip cache and consumes equal power like the PII Mobile at the same speeds.
PowerBook G3 WallStreet III: According to MacOS Rumors Apple has currently the third revision of the PowerBook G3 series in the works. WallStreet III will fill the gap until the successor codenamed Lombard (100 instead of 66.7 MHz system bus) will appear. The machines at Apple are said to run from 266 to 433 MHz, but they will most likely ship with 300 to 400 MHz, featuring 512k and 1MB of backside cache. Thanks to ultrasmall SO-DIMMs 384 to 512MB max. RAM are said to be possible. Firewire and USB PCMCIA cards will be available as built to order options. Larger harddisks (up to 12 GB) are planned, but it's uncertain if the 15" TFT display will make its way in WallStreet III or will be held back until Lombard (WallStreet III has a slightly altered enclosure and is said to be able housing the 15" display). MacOS Rumors sais Apple will show WallStreet III at Macworld Expo in Tokyo next month.
25.01.1999: G3-Upgrades in Rechnern mit Inline-Cache: Für die Rechner mit dem Codenamen Kansas (PowerMac 8600/250-300 und 9600/300-350) hat Apple das Motherboard Tsunami (9600) bzw. Nitro (8600) leicht modifiziert.
G3 upgrades for machines having Inline-Cache: For the Macs developed under the codename Kansas (PowerMac 8600/250-300 and 9600/300-350) Apple has modified the Tsunami (9600) and Nitro (8600) motherboard. The changes are mostly concerned on the slightly different signal carriers on the PINs of the processor daughter card, which includes 1MB inline cache in these machines. Since Apple didn't document these changes it's no surprise that some G3 upgrades do not work properly in these Macs. Examples are the JOEcard from Met@box, Maccelerate!750 from Phase5, Crescendo G3 from Sonnet Technologies and others. Newer cards from PowerLogix and NewerTech (as well as their clones) do support the modified processor slot. Since there are only few machines with inline cache on the market it seems not to be economic developing a new card layout to support these Macs, also because there are already alternatives available from other companies. This means that most incompatible cards are not likely to be modified to fit in these machines in the future.

Mezzanine slot in new iMacs: According to XLR8 Your Mac only the Mezzanine connector is missing on the Columbus motherboard of the new iMacs (Rev. C), not the logic behind it. Several third party developments have shown up for this slot, like a VooDoo2 graphics accelerator or SCSI adapters. Apple has removed this slot with the introduction of the new 266 MHz fast iMacs (Rev. C). Formac for example will ship its iPowerRaid (UltraWide SCSI) including a Mezzanine adaptor on demand. So theoretically every iMac owner has the possibility to expand his machine.
Racks for iMac and PowerMac G3 Yosemite: The former Mac cloner Marathon Computer has announced a 19" rackmount enclosure for the iMac: The "PowerRack iMac" is one rack space tall and contains a power supply, floppy drive, video out and a serial port. Marathon also announced the "PowerRack G3-Blue" based on the Yosemite board and being two or four rack space units tall. Marathon still ships its enclosures for older Macs (TS Tsunami (G3 upgraded) and TZ Tanzania) as well as for monitors.
ZIF processor upgrades in Yosemite PowerMac G3: Theoretically it is possible to put a G3 upgrade built for Gossamer PowerMacs in the new Yosemite machines. But you have to take care of one fact: ZIF modules with a fixed processor to bus ratio won't work because of the higher motherboard speed (100 vs. 66.7 MHz). A ZIF module designed for Gossamer to run at 300 MHz would run at 450 MHz in Yosemite (ratio 4.5) - a speed much too high for the installed 300 MHz CPU (for a 400 MHz ZIF this would be 600 MHz ...).
USB harddisks: LaCie now ships harddisks in a blue design casing ("eko") for the USB port found in the iMac and the new Yosemite PowerMac G3 (as well as in more and more PCs running Windows 98): 4.3 GB (500 DM) 6.4 GB (540 DM); planned are 10.1 GB (ca. 700 DM). The bad news is that because of the USB port there is a limited transfer rate of 1.5 MB per second (external SCSI port on recent Macs: 5 MB/s, UltraSCSI: 20 MB/s, Firewire: 80 MB/s). End Q1 LaCie is said to ship harddisks for Firewire.
Macbench 4.0 scores: We have made one of our last updates on our Macbench 4.0 scores - this tool is old (1997) and already replaced by MB 5.0. Our table with all scores (68040 to PowerPC 750/G3 incl. PowerPC X704) is 104k in size. We also have a table (50k) with only scores based on the PowerPC 750 (computers and upgrades), and a table comparing all systems at a recalculated speed of 100 MHz (77k). There is also a page with two charts for CPU and FPU performance.
Yosemite bus speed: Setting the jumpers in the block on the motherboard of the new G3 Macs it is also possible to modify the bus speed (besides the processor speed - the cpu : bus ratio). Standard setting is 100 MHz - 66, 90, 94.5, 116.3 and 120 MHz are also possible. According to XLR8yourMac the bus speed has only minimal effect on the system performance (we have noticed this on various G3 upgrades for older Macs as well when overclocking a PowerMac G3/233: Cinema 4DXL large Benchmark, NeuroNet) and may cause instability when overclocked. We'll show some real world tests as soon as our machine has arrived.
Jackhammer SCSI in new G3 Macs: Hammerstorage has posted a firmware patch for its SCSI PCI cards. This patch allows to boot from devices connected to Hammerstorage SCSI cards.
New iMac colors for old machines? According to NoBeige.com it is possible for Apple retailers to order the five different color plastic shells of the new iMacs (revision C, 266 MHz) directly from Apple. It is unclear whether or not these parts (70 US$) will fit in the older style iMacs (rev. A and B, 233 MHz).
Yosemite jumper tuning: Accoring to Mike Breeden from Accelerate Your Mac the new Yosemite PowerMacs can be indeed tuned like it was possible with the G3 Gossamer machines (see our description): On the Yosemite board the jumpers 1-4 in the jumper block are for setting the bus to CPU ratio, 5 & 6 for PCI bus to system bus ratio and 7-9 (possibly 7-11) for the bus speed itself. The settings to 300 MHz (set jumper 2, 3, 4), 350 (1), 400 (1, 3) and 450 MHz (4) at 100 MHz system bus are confirmed. Some users reported the successful overclocking by +50 MHz. Depending on the tolerance of each part in your machine overclocking will show effect on the stability of your system. Attention: Overclocking requires to remove (void) a warranty tape on the motherboard.
Serial adaptor for USB: Griffin Technology has announced gPort, a universal serial adapter for the USB port of iMac and the new PowerMac G3 series. It offers connectivity to all kind of serial devices like printers, modems (even Geoport), digital cameras, MIDI devices etc. gPort, which also supports LocalTalk and the connection to a LocalTalk network, will be available starting mid February for 59 US$.
More G3 upgrades for L2 slot: There are already some G3 upgrades available for the Macs without processor daughter card (Performa / PowerMac 5400, 5500, 6400, 6500, Spartacus and similar clones). They use the L2 cache slot. Sonnet Technologies also announced upgrades for those machines (late January): 240 MHz with 512k backside cache for 400 US$, 300 MHz with 512k cache for 500 US$ and 300 MHz with 1MB cache for 600 US$. Sonnet also has the Presto PPC, a 100 MHz fast PowerPC 601 upgrade with 1MB conventional cache for the 68k Macs Quadra and Centris (based on technology from the former cloner Daystar Digital).
SGI powered NT: Silicon Graphics, widely known for their own Unix based graphics workstations, has announced machines running Windows NT a year ago. Now the Visual Workstations have been presented: The SG 320 features a 350 MHz fast Pentium II processor, the SG 540 is upgradeable to four CPUs and comes with one 450 MHz Pentium II Xeon built-in (512k 450 MHz 1:1 backside cache). The machines have 128 MB RAM, a 6.4 GB Ultra ATA (5400 rpm) or 9.1 GB UltraSCSI (7200 rpm) harddisk, a USB keyboard and other stuff preinstalled. The workstations incorporate SGI's Integrated Visual Computing architecture (IVC), designed to offload 2D and 3D graphics, video, audio and I/O from the PCI and AGP buses, the bottlenecks of todays machines. While the SG 320 is already available for 3395 US$ the SG 540 will come in Q2 and will cost 5995 US$. The cases of the new machines look quite cool.
Yosemite bus speed: There are rumors saying that the Yosemite board has some jumpers, just like the Gossamer motherboard. We'll try to figure if there are jumpers for setting the bus speed, cpu clock and PCI slot speed as soon as our machine has arrived.
149 US$ ausgeliefert.
SCSI for new Macs: Adaptec has announced two PCI cards with SCSI port. The SCSI card Adaptec 2906 supports both internal and external connections and offers up to 10 MB/sec - it's about twice as fast as the built-in Mac SCSI. Zip and Jaz drives, harddisks, scanners etc. bought for older Macs can be used with the new Yosemite PowerMacs too. The PowerDomain 2930U (UltraSCSI) offers up to 20 MB/sec. The cards will ship late January for a suggested retail price of 69 and 149 US$.
ZIF for older Macs: PowerLogix showed its ZForce G3/G4 adaptor for Tsunami, Nitro and TNT based machines (PowerMac 7500-9600 and similar clones). That way you can use processor modules from the PowerMac G3 series as well as the G4 modules due this summer. This also makes sense if you plan to upgrade a PowerMac G3 and want to use its G3 module in one of the Generation 2 Macs mentioned above. The adaptor will ship in March for 175 US$.
10.01.1999: Neue Prozessoren von Intel: Intel liefert den 450 MHz schnellen Pentium II Xeon Prozessor jetzt mit 512k, 1MB oder 2MB Backside-Cache (1:1) aus. Preislich kosten die Chips in Mengen ab 1000 Stück 824, 1980 bzw. 3692 US$.
New processors from Intel: Intel now ships the 450 MHz fast Pentium II Xeon processor equipped with 512k, 1MB or 2MB backside cache (1:1). In quantities of 1000 (or more) they cost 824, 1980 or 3692 US$ resp. The low end chip Celereon is available at speeds of 366 and 400 MHz (66 MHz bus) and with 128k L2 cache.
Next week Intel is expected to show its Pentium III, codenamed Katmai. It will run at initially 400 and 450 MHz and feature the extended multimedia instruction set MMX2. The latter is said to improve 3D and gaming perfomance.
New Mac, but no SCSI port - what about the old SCSI devices? The iMac was the first Mac where Apple decided to remove the SCSI port, but also the new PowerMac G3/Pro doesn't have one anymore. What about the external ZIP drive, the scanner, the external harddisks? Newer Technology has announced its uLine: products for the USB port. Besides two FlashCard / Smart Media readers (uFlash-CF, uFlash-SM) for digital cameras, the uDrive (1.4 MB floppy drive), and the uHub (for connecting other keyboards, mouses, printers, cameras, monitors, ...) they also offer uSCSI, a SCSI adapter for the USB port (79 US$). USB allows only 12 Mbps (1.5 MB/sec), but here you have a way to use your old devices on a new Mac. For the iMac this is the only way since there is no option to add PCI SCSI cards (exception: cards for the Mazzanine slot which is only available in the revisions A & B of the motherboard - iMac running at 233 MHz).

No Mezzanine slot anymore: Official info from Apple sais that the new 266-MHz iMacs (Columbus motherboard, revision C) do not have the Mezzanine slot anymore. This slot is somewhat comparable to the slot for personality cards in the PowerMac G3, but Apple never released any official documentation. Several manufacturers developed peripherals using this slot while Apple discouraged any developer planning to take advantage of it, so now they won't be of any use in the new iMacs (e.g. a VooDoo2 graphics accelerator or an Ultra Wide SCSI adapter). If you plan to use one of these options, buy an "old" iMac. The Mazzanine slot was used only during the development of iMac.
Because the USB port seems to be very successful, Apple decided to remove the IrDA port (infra red) too.
New PowerMacs: There were a lot of speculations on the new Yosemite based Macs before the Macworld Expo. Most of the speculations were indeed not wrong (for more info on Yosemite see here). Besides the three 300, 350 and 400 MHz fast Macs there are also two 350 and 400 MHz fast servers available. All new Macs have a 100 MHz fast system bus, a 24X CD-ROM (except the 350 DVD), 2 Firewire ports, 2 USB ports, 1 ADB port, 10/100 BaseT ethernet and an ultrafast ATI Rage 128 GL graphics chip with 16 MB video RAM on a PCI card (supports both QuickDraw 3D RAVE and OpenGL - a pleasure for gamers).

The "old" iMac - sold over 800'000x worldwide - will cost 1049 US$ (previously 1299), the new ones 1199 US$.
Game Station Macintosh: It's no rumor anymore, Connectix today officially announced its Sony PlayStation (PSX) Emulator. Hardware requirements are a PowerMac G3, a PowerBook G3 or an iMac. Macs with a G3 upgrade may also run the Virtual Game Station, but this may result in a game quality loss (main reason may be the slower motherboard). Connectix also noted that the emulator may occasionally need to skip a frame in the video display to keep up with the game flow. Keyboard, joystick, gamepad or other controllers can be used for game play. The VGS will surely bring some more people to the Mac market.
02.01.1999: Hintergrundinfos: Prozessorupgrades.
Background infos: Processor upgrades. G3 upgrades are interesting for Mac users, since nearly every PowerMac and clone can be pumped up. But not every Mac can be lifted on the same computing performance level, this depends - besides different RAM types - mostly on the system bus clock (varies from motherboard to motherboard). The PowerPC 750 runs at up to eight times the bus speed (a processor supporting up to factor 10 should be available early this year). The following tables shows you which speeds are possible for some computers, more info is available on our bus speed page.
Computer max. Bus Speed max. CPU Speed (PowerPC 750, Factor 8.0)
PowerMac 6100/60 30.0 MHz 240.0 MHz
PowerMac 6100/66 33.0 MHz 264.0 MHz
PowerMac 5400 40.0 MHz 320.0 MHz
PowerMac 8500 (*) 50.0 MHz 400.0 MHz
PowerMac G3 (*) 66.7 MHz 533.3 MHz
Yosemite (G3 Pro) 100.0 MHz 800.0 MHz
(*) Bus >50MHz bzw. >66.7MHz möglich (bus overclocking possible)
